The History of Mueller
Long before the coffee shops and walking trails, Mueller was runways and runway lights. The land was home to Austin’s very first airport — the Robert Mueller Municipal Airport — which opened in 1936. It was named after Robert Mueller, a City Council member in the 1920s who pronounced his name “Miller.”
For decades, Mueller Airport was the heart of Austin’s air travel. In the 1930s it expanded, and by 1961 it gained its iconic blue-and-white control tower and a new terminal. As recently as the 1990s, travelers could stroll up to departure gates with minimal screening, and parking cost just $6 a day. Drivers on nearby Interstate 35 could watch jetliners descend so close overhead it felt like you could wave to the passengers — and sometimes they waved back.
By the late 1990s, Mueller Airport had no room left to grow. Surrounded by neighborhoods and cut off by the highway, the city made the decision to close it. In 1999, Austin–Bergstrom International Airport opened, and Mueller closed its doors after 63 years of service.
The City of Austin then launched the Mueller Master Plan in 2000, partnering with developer Catellus to transform the old airport into a model urban community. The first commercial buildings opened in 2007, and the neighborhood has been growing ever since. Today, roughly 6,000 people call Mueller home — and that number continues to rise.
The only piece of the old airport that still stands is the blue-and-white control tower on Berkman Drive. It is a quiet reminder of what this neighborhood once was — and a striking contrast to what it has become.
